LOOKISM

2021.04.15

Plastic surgery was conducted based on the instinctive attraction or desire of people created by today's contemporary society. This also includes social issues, due to the obsession with appearance, which is indispensable in modern society, many people feel the need to improve their outer appearance, complying to superficial beauty standards and our inner self is gradually being forgotten. For example, in Korea, people who are visually pleasant or "attractive" are considered and treated superiorly. This is called lookism, and it is the most common concept in Korean society, to seek attention, validation and special treatment. This video insists on the need to form a more respectful society, which was collaborated with Kim Danbi, a contemporary dancer in Kyoto University of the Arts.

Since the COVID-19 crisis, racism and hate crimes against Asians are spreading.
Discrimination against Asians all over the world is not confined to a single country, and even now, wariness, hatred, and wounds against each other are deepening.

I think that human beings are nothing more than a group distinguished by racial traits.
As "one" human beings with dignity,
Shouldn't we ourselves violate the rights that should be guaranteed by default?

In order to socially raise awareness of continued racism, violence and crime against Asians,
I tried to create an animation through a work of art.

욕망

In Nikolai Gogol's work 'The Nose', it symbolizes desire.

This nose walks around pretending to be a human, posing as a high official. This person's nose behaves to discredit even the personality system to which it belonged.

This nose represents the owner's career-oriented desire.
The nose is the only protruding part of the face. This characteristic symbolizes people's desire to stand out.

I tried to recreate this work through a video, which depicts people who are thoroughly obsessed with material and power, who are distracted by superficial and trivial matters to the point of laughing, and who miss the really important things.

한계

2021.01.21

"한계", Limit" in Korean is a reinterpretation of the play produced based on the analysis of the conflicting personalities of Lopahin and Ranespkaya based on Anton Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard".

In "The Cherry Orchard", Lopahin and Ranevskaya caught my eye the most, and these two have conflicting values about “reality” and “ideality”. These two characters have extreme opposite qualities, but are personalities that can be easily found in the modern society we live in. As for the overall content of the work, it was my intention to depict the ironic relationships, limitations, and dispositions of human beings that we cannot measure, and to simply express the impact of society on mankind in short scenes.

"한계" is a work created by understanding the thoughts and intentions of the artists during the work process and describing the analyzed information.
